Disney’s Website and Dieter Rams’ Design Principles

By Brady Houser -Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who created the 10 principles of good design. His ideas say that good design should be useful, understandable, honest, attractive, long-lasting, and as simple as possible. These principles are important because design is not only about making something look nice. It should also help people use a product or website without becoming confused. Rams’ belief of “less, but better” can still be applied to modern websites, including Disney.com.

Disney’s website follows many of Rams’ principles because it is colorful, organized, and easy to understand. The navigation clearly directs users to Disney+, movies, shopping, and information about Disney vacations. The recognizable characters and large images also make the site attractive and consistent with Disney’s brand. However, the site does not completely follow Rams’ ideas about being unobtrusive and using as little design as possible. There are many large advertisements and promotions competing for attention, which can make the homepage feel crowded. Overall, Disney’s website is useful and visually appealing, but it could better follow Rams’ principles by simplifying the homepage and focusing on fewer promotions.
